Gulf Oil Philippines Inc. Gets ISO 9002 in Record Time

The quality system of Gulf Oil Philippines, Inc. (GOPI) was recently granted ISO 9002 rating by the Business Certification International (BCI) of UK in record time of five months.

GOPi Directors Roland Rodriguez and Atty. Pedro Aquino received the award from Benjamin D. Domingo, Chairman of the BCI-UK in simple rites held at the EDSA Shangrila Hotel with the oil firm's board of directors in the presence of certification body officials, government leaders and other distinguished guests including members of media.

Gulf Oil Phils. is the latest entrant to the Philippines' downstream petroleum business which is engaged initially in marketing high-grade premium lubricants from engine oils to transmission fluids, brake fluids, radiator coolants, greases and gear oils. The local firm is a joint venture between Gulf Oil International (GOI) and the Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC).

For the past 100 years, the American oil company has remained as one of the top 20 petroleum companies in the world. Gulf's operation is present in more than 53 countries with more than 1,700 products and a turnover of more than US$ 1-billion.

According to GOPi CEO Ramesh Rao, the company is planning to get into the service station business by year 2001. The company has an authorized capital of P157-million and is projected to make a turnover of more than P120-million in the first year of operation alone. Being an ISO 9002 and QS9000 company, its infrastructure is reported to be at par if not the best in the industry and its products are considered to be unrivaled in quality or at the very least, match its competitors.

"One of the key elements of Gulf's success is its ability to adapt itself easily to the needs of the country it does business in," Rao said, "and Gulf has already proven its keen understanding with its recent track record of successful retail marketing in India, China, The Netherlands, Brazil, Argentina, Japan and Italy," he added. Gulf ventured into the Philippines to invite interested parties who wish to take advantage of the partnership offer, either as a supplier, buyer or as an associate and part of the Gulf family.
